But during their stay, they were found dead in their hotel room.

At first, it wasn’t clear what had happened. Later, investigators pointed to carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause. Carbon monoxide is a gas you can’t see or smell… but it can be very dangerous in enclosed spaces, especially if there’s a faulty appliance.

Cases like this are rare, but they do happen — and they’re often preventable.

It’s a reminder that when you travel, it’s worth taking a moment to check basic safety measures, like whether there’s a carbon monoxide detector in your room.
