Hotel Bathroom Electrical Safety: What Guests Need to Know

The bathroom is one of the places in a hotel where electrical safety deserves particular attention. Water and electricity can create serious risks, so guests should never ignore signs of faulty or damaged electrical equipment.

When you arrive, take a quick look around. Check electrical outlets, switches, hairdryers and other appliances for obvious damage. Loose sockets, exposed wiring, scorch marks or damaged cables should be reported to the hotel.

Keep electrical appliances away from sinks, showers and bathtubs, and don't use electrical equipment if your hands or the equipment itself are wet.

Different countries have different requirements for electrical installations in hotels and other accommodation. Some properties may also have additional safety measures designed to reduce the risk of electric shock.

As a guest, you aren't expected to inspect the hotel's electrical system. However, if you notice something that looks obviously dangerous, it's sensible to report it rather than assume someone else will deal with it.

If an electrical problem has already caused an injury, seek appropriate medical attention and document what happened. Photographs of the hazard, medical records, receipts and communication with the hotel may all be useful if you later need to establish what happened.

Most importantly, don't attempt to repair electrical equipment yourself.

A hotel room should provide a safe environment for guests. If you discover an obvious electrical hazard, stop using it, report it and ask the hotel to resolve the problem.
