Never Put Your Suitcase On The Hotel Bed

Many travelers walk into their hotel room and immediately place their suitcase on the bed. It seems harmless, but there are several reasons why this is a habit worth breaking.

The most commonly cited reason is bed bugs. While most hotels maintain high cleanliness standards, bed bugs can occasionally be introduced by previous guests. These pests are often found around mattresses, headboards, and nearby furniture. Placing your luggage on the bed increases the chance that they could crawl into your suitcase and travel home with you.

There's another reason that many people overlook: your suitcase is dirty.

Think about where your luggage has been. Its wheels have rolled across city sidewalks, airport terminals, train stations, parking garages, hotel entrances, public restrooms, and countless other surfaces. Along the way, they collect dirt, bacteria, spills, and other contaminants. When you place your suitcase on a bed, all of that grime can end up where you sleep.

Even the sides and bottom of a suitcase often come into contact with floors, baggage carts, security conveyor belts, and luggage compartments. Few travelers clean their luggage regularly, which means those surfaces may be much dirtier than they appear.

Instead of placing your suitcase on the bed, use the luggage rack provided by the hotel. If no rack is available, place your luggage on a hard surface away from the bed and upholstered furniture. Before unpacking, take a quick look at the mattress seams and headboard for any signs of bed bugs.

This simple habit improves both cleanliness and travel safety. After all, your hotel bed should be one of the cleanest places in the room—not a parking spot for something that's been rolling through the streets all day.
