This moment feels routine, but the biggest mistake at check in? Letting your room number be said out loud.

If someone nearby hears it, they now know exactly where you’re staying. That’s information you can’t take back—and you don’t know who’s listening. Professional hotel staff are trained to avoid this. They’ll write it down, circle it, or show it discreetly instead of saying it.

But your awareness matters too. When confirming your identity, don’t respond loudly if someone says your name first.

Take a second to observe your surroundings. Is someone standing unusually close? Is anyone paying attention to your interaction? Even after you receive your key, don’t display it openly. Many hotel key cards have the room number printed on them.
